Andy Griffith’s famous 1953 stand-up monologue about college football. It has become one of the most beloved comedy recordings of all time. The illustrations used in this video were drawn by George Woodbridge, a Mad Magazine artist. The comic illustration appear in Mad Magazine in 1958. You can view the illustration at www.collectmad.com We edited the illustrations to match the story line. We then used this clip for illustrative purposes during one of our church services here at Cornerstone City Church. www.CornerstoneIndy.com

A stubbed toe is funnier than Leno.
this is cool
This is very funny! I like this a lot!
I like this a lot! It’s very funny.
This is great.

@contour157 There may be no direct reference in MAD magazine to the specific university setting of this football game but there’s no doubt that the setting for this game took place at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill — home of the University of North Carolin, and of course, the alma mater of Andy Griffith.
Fantastic……………………….
I remember hearing this when I was about 12 when I was about 140 miles out of Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico on Sirius radio. I didn’t listen to it, but When Andy talked about the “big orange drink”, i knew this was the same story I heard a few years back.
It’s difficult to accept the idea of a man with a Southern accent having absolutely no idea of what football is. It’s not as if he’s a Martian fresh out of a spaceship – he’s from the South, where football is extremely popular. Didn’t he attend high school with a football team?
Buddy, have a drink!
One of the original rednecks. Still funny.
Is it weird that i’m only 16 and i grew up listening to this? i just love it!
@wmlfan9
You’ve obviously never been to Mt. Airy, North Carolina.
they did, and I know, friends, that they couldn’t'a eat it because they kicked it the whole evenin’ an’ it never busted!
@MrJDFrog OK, I’ll bite. Why is it obvious that I’ve never been to Mt. Airy, NC?
@jones27557 I bow to your greater knowledge. If you are the descendent of a long line of dirt poor tobacco farmers then you know a lot more about Southern culture than this Yankee. Yes, I see your point. This comedy bit was made in 1953 which was before football became the craze that it now is in the South. And a rural Southerner who had never been out of his local county and had never seen TV might indeed have never heard of football. Thanks for writing.
@wmlfan9
Because even today it’s really just one street. It’s entirely conceivable to me that, in the era that Andy grew up, there might have been some folks from up the holler who had never seen a football game.
@MrJDFrog Oh, OK. Now I get you. Thanks for the info. And, yes, you’re right – I’ve never been to Mt Airy.
I used to have this on cassette long time ago, thnx for putting this up, I haven’t heatd this in years.
I wonder if Tom Hanks’ portrayal of Forrest Gump was partly inspired by this sketch.
They couldn’t because they kicked it the whole evening and it never busted. LMAO.
The drawings are beyond funny. And don’t foregt about the convicts….
Nice, clean, humor. None of that these days.
14 people wouldn’t know funny if you hit them on the head with that very same pumpkin that never busted.
I first heard this as a child (it must have just come out). I thought it was funny then, and I still do.
@PR0Michael1 – If you really feel that way, I feel sorry for you.
My dad gave me this 45 record (yes, an actual 45 record, the kind you played on a turntable) when I was a kid. I loved it then, I love it now!
I love Andy Griffith!
I never had a Grand Father I would be honored to be his!
His morals and standards of life I cherish…
My the Lord Almighty God of Israel bless him
with all that he desires! AMEN!
